The brand new Gordon Lake Disc Golf Course held its first official competition, First Vibran Birdie Bash Disc Golf tournament on May 4th. Thanks to tremendous efforts of its organizers Michael Hopper and Billy Price, all the people who helped them, and 25 sponsors the tournament had a great success and received a lot of positive feedback from participants and onlookers. All of the proceeds, $918, was donated to the City of Iowa Park Parks Department for future development and improvement of the Iowa Park Disc Golf Course.
72 players from Iowa Park, Wichita Falls, Shepherd AFB, Burkburnett, Electra, Vernon, Athens, Longview, Goldthwaite (all – Texas), and Duncan and Lawton (Oklahoma) came to Lake Gordon to participate in the event. With that amount of players, First Vibran Birdie Bash Disc Golf tournament is considered the fourth largest tournament of its kind in the country.
There were two contests: Closest to the Pin and Ring of Fire. In the first contest players were trying to get as close as possible to the basket from the tee box. Ring of Fire was a putting contest in which all players putt from a set distance of 30 foot. Matt Mize was the winner in the Closest to the Pin contest; Joe Varela was the best in the Ring of Fire, Julie Whitaker won among women. Bruno Torres won the tournament’s overall first place, Nick Hibden came second.
There is just some Facebook feedback on the tournament.
