Citizen Input is Always Welcome in Iowa Park

Representative government at all levels should operate in a way that is open and accessible to the people it represents.  The City Council of the City of Iowa Park, through the Home Rule Charter, encourages all citizens to participate in the process of self-governing.  City Council generally meets in the Council Chambers at City Hall on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m. for the convenience of the public; however, additional meetings can be scheduled as necessary and meetings  can be cancelled if there is no public business to address.  All City Council and other public meetings are advertised and the agendas posted in advance.  Copies of the agenda are posted at City Hall and on the door of the City Council Chambers at least 72 hours before any public meeting.  Copies are forwarded to local media and posted on the City’s website.  Links to the website are posted on popular social media outlets as well.  The Iowa Park Leader generally published and discusses agenda items before any public meetings.  Some business, such as consultations with attorneys, deliberations about real property and certain personnel matters are handled in executive sessions (or closed meetings); however, agendas are posted in advance and any official action must occur during an open public meeting.

Any citizen or organization can request a public appearance before the City Council to address a specific topic.  The City Secretary will place the appearance on the agenda for an upcoming City Council meeting.   For items not an agenda, citizens may sign up for “Citizens’ Input” prior to any public meeting and address City Council for up to five minutes.  Elected officials cannot respond specifically to an item which is not on the agenda; however, it is an opportunity for citizens to publicly express their opinions.  The City Council of the City of Iowa Park, through the Home Rule Charter, encourages all citizens to participate in the process of self-governing.
